Abande Ubuntu Ezweni
How it all started

MajuMaju held auditions for Abande choir, and amongst the people who attended the audition was Oleksiy Meleshko who is originally from Ukraine and currently a temporary resident in Canada. His vocal capabilities were so great that he got chosen to join the choir. After first meeting he shared his story of how he just found out through DNA ancestry test that he is half Nigerian from father’s side, and that he is the director for the Ukrainian Choir “Kolo”. That's when Maju came up with the idea of collaboration between Ukraine and Africa for Oleksiy to learn about African culture and people, since he had never been exposed to it before. Shortly after first Abande concert, in a quiet miraculous way, Oleksiy was able to find his father, whom he had never known before. After this second Abande concert, he will be travelling to Europe to meet his father and his newly discovered family personally. For Oleksiy, the Abande project is an artistic ritual of bringing closer the African and the Ukrainian worlds, which both are so distant from each other, but of which both he is an offspring.

To our deepest regret, the tragedy in Ukraine is still going on. Sadly, the biggest victims of such atrocities are always regular people: lonely, retired elders, little babies, widows, and families that struggle to survive...

We feel their pain and want to help in a way we can. Therefore, we've decided to dedicate a part of the revenue to help those affected by war.

The Ukranian members of our show will be selling crafts and merchandise, revenue for which also go support people in Ukraine.
